South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center: A Hidden Green Oasis — Colonia Del Rey RV Blog

In a city known for its beaches and waterfront, the South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center offers a different kind of beauty — the lush, fragrant, colorful world of South Texas plant life, artfully arranged across 180 acres of carefully tended gardens and natural habitat south of town on South Staples Road.

The gardens feature a series of themed areas that take you through different aspects of the regional flora and landscape. The Sensory Garden is especially popular with younger visitors, engaging them through scent, texture, and color. The Rose Garden is stunning during its peak bloom periods, and the Orchid House showcases a remarkable collection of tropical specimens that thrive in the South Texas climate. The Hummingbird and Butterfly Garden is a highlight during the spring and summer, when dozens of butterfly species and multiple hummingbird species can be seen working the nectar plants at close range.

The Butterfly House is a fan favorite, particularly for families with children. Walking into a climate-controlled enclosure filled with hundreds of free-flying butterflies landing on your arms and shoulders is a genuinely magical experience at any age. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to help you identify the different species in residence.

The Nature Center portion of the property features native plants and habitats representative of the South Texas coastal plain, with walking trails that wind through oak mottes and native wildflower meadows. Birding is excellent throughout the gardens, and the combination of native plantings and water features attracts a wide variety of species.

For RV travelers at Colonia del Rey RV Park, the Botanical Gardens make a wonderful morning or early afternoon outing, especially on a weekday when it's less crowded. The gardens are open year-round, though spring and early summer are the most colorful times to visit. Bring your camera — this place rewards it.
